Liquid membrane waterproofing creates a seamless, flexible barrier that protects roofs, balconies, basements, and wet areas from water penetration. When installed correctly, it can bridge minor cracks and provide durable protection without the joints found in sheet membranes.
Begin with a complete inspection of the substrate. Remove dust, oil, loose concrete, old coatings, and standing water. Repair cracks, holes, honeycombing, and uneven areas with a compatible repair mortar. The surface must be sound, clean, dry, and sufficiently smooth. Sharp edges should be rounded, while drains, corners, and pipe penetrations require special attention.
Next, apply the manufacturer-approved primer. Priming improves adhesion, seals porous surfaces, and reduces the risk of pinholes. Allow it to dry according to the product instructions. Do not apply the membrane during rain, heavy humidity, extreme heat, or when the substrate temperature is outside the recommended range.
Before full application, reinforce vulnerable details. Install compatible reinforcing fabric at joints, corners, cracks, upstands, and around penetrations. Embed the fabric into a wet coat of membrane, remove wrinkles, and cover it completely. This step helps control movement and prevents early failure in high-stress areas.
Apply the liquid membrane in two or more uniform coats using a roller, brush, or airless spray machine. Maintain the specified wet-film thickness and spread rate. Apply the second coat only after the first has cured sufficiently, usually in a different direction. Avoid over-thinning, puddles, missed areas, and excessive rolling, as these can reduce the final waterproofing performance.
After application, protect the membrane from rain, dust, traffic, and impact during curing. Inspect the finished surface for pinholes, blisters, thin spots, and incomplete coverage. Repair defects with compatible material and confirm that drains remain clear. Where required, perform a flood test after full curing, ensuring that the structure can safely support the test load.
Finally, install protection layers or finishes specified for the project. Keep records of product batches, weather conditions, application thickness, and inspection results. Regularly check the waterproofed area for mechanical damage, blocked drains, and failed sealant. Prompt maintenance will extend the service life of the liquid membrane and preserve the building’s water resistance.
